A Texas woman recently filed a new Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She claims that after using the cooker, she suffered from serious injuries. She seeks general and special damages.

Tabletops Unlimited, d/b/a TTU, designs, manufacturers, markets, imports, distributes and sells a wide range of consumer products, including the Phillippe Richard Pressure Cooker.

Around July 20, 2019, the plaintiff was using the cooker when the lid suddenly and unexpectedly exploded off the pressure cooker’s pot. The scalding hot contents were forcefully ejected from the cooker onto the plaintiff, causing her to suffer from severe, disfiguring burns to her face, chest, and all four extremities.

The plaintiff states that the pressure cooker was defectively and negligently designed and manufactured by TTU and that it failed to properly prevent the lid from being removed while the unit remained pressurized.

TTU advertises its pressure cookers as having triple safety features including the following:

The plaintiff states that TTU’s ads touting the safety of their pressure cookers are not only misleading, but flatly wrong, and put consumers in harm’s way.

The Philippe Richard Pressure Cooker is one of many that have been linked with explosive incidents leading to injuries including burns, eye damage and blindness, disfigurement and permanent scarring, and more. Other similar products include:

In most pressure cooker lawsuits, the plaintiffs allege that the safety mechanisms are defective as they allow the lid to be removed before the steam has been released. Safety features that may fail include the lid locks, pressure release valves, anti-block vents, automated pressure controls, and pressure-lowering features.

When a pressure cooker explodes, the liquids, steam, and solid foods inside can cause severe burns to anyone standing nearby, including children. In some of the most violent explosions, parts of the cooker itself can turn into shrapnel.

You can take steps to reduce the risk of your pressure cooker exploding, but with the current designs, it’s still possible that accidents may occur.
