NEW YORK (AP) — It’s been quite a year for conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, forming an orchestra from scratch, leading it on a 12-city tour, and then as soon as it disbanded going straight to the Metropolitan Opera to prepare for an opening-week debut.
Hers were the guiding hands that molded the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, an ensemble founded as a musical statement of defiance against Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Parents suing after being separated from their children at the U.S.-Mexico border are pushing back against a Justice Department effort to require additional psychological evaluations to measure how much the Trump-era traumatized them. Attorneys argue in new court documents that the effects of the policy has been unusually well-documented and it’s unfair to require parents to undergo another round of testing now. The migrants seeking compensation have already undergone other evaluations, but the Justice Department said last month that testing from a government-chosen expert is necessary since the parents are alleging permanent mental and emotional injuries.
A lawyer for Brad Pitt has responded to abuse allegations that were detailed at length this week in a legal document filed by ex-wife Angelina Jolie, saying Pitt isn’t about to cop to any false accusations.

The Georgia prosecutor investigating whether then-President Donald Trump and others illegally tried to interfere in the 2020 election has filed paperwork seeking to compel testimony from a new batch of Trump allies. They include former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis filed petitions seeking to have Gingrich and Flynn, as well as former White House lawyer Eric Herschmann and others, testify next month before a special grand jury that’s been seated to aid her investigation. They join a string of other high-profile Trump allies and advisers who have been called to testify in the investigation.
Jill Biden is using the story of a teenage friend's abortion to illustrate what she says is at stake in November's elections. In a political speech Friday in San Francisco, the first lady said her friend had to be declared mentally unfit in order to end her pregnancy in the late 1960s, when abortion was illegal. Biden asked, “How could we go back to that time?" The first lady said that era was defined by secrecy, shame, silence, danger and sometimes death for many women and they won't go back. She was reacting to the Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn constitutional protections for abortion and let individual states decide.
DALLAS — Accused serial killer Billy Chemirmir hunted and killed elderly women, stole their jewelry and sold it to make his living, Dallas County prosecutors told jurors Friday, the last day of Chemirmir’s capital murder trial.
Saints coach Dennis Allen says he expects Andy Dalton to start at quarterback for New Orleans when the Saints host the Seattle Seahawks. Saints receiver Michael Thomas has been ruled out for a second straight game because of his foot injury. Dalton made his first start for New Orleans in last week’s 28-25 loss to Minnesota in London because of back and ankle injuries hampering season-opening starter Jameis Winston. Dalton completed 20 of 28 passes for 236 yards and one touchdown without an interception. The Saints also have ruled out defensive end Payton Turner with a chest injury and safety P.J. Williams with a quadriceps injury.
ATLANTA — Facing a murder trial for the second time in his wife’s 2016 shooting, Claud “Tex” McIver was denied bond Friday by a Fulton County judge who expressed concerns that McIver was a flight risk.
Officials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have announced that they are pausing gender affirming surgeries for minors in order to review their practices. The news comes amid mounting political pressure from Tennessee’s Republican leaders — many of whom are running for reelection — who demanded an investigation into VUMC after videos surfaced on social media of a doctor touting that gender-affirming procedures are “huge money makers” for hospitals. On average, VUMC has provided five gender-affirming surgeries to minors every year since its transgender clinic opened in 2018. All were over the age of 16, had parental consent and none received genital procedures.

A judge has declined to dismiss the case against a western Michigan restaurant owner who was jailed and fined $15,000 for violating state orders that banned indoor dining during the pandemic. Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, owner of Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria, had asked an Ingham County judge to dismiss the case against her and award her damages. However, The Grand Rapids Press reports Circuit Judge Wanda Stokes sided Thursday with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which filed a complaint against here in February 2021. That complaint eventually resulted in the restaurant being shuttered for five months after the agency suspended her food license.

The parents of figure skater Bridget Namiotka have told USA Today that she died in July at age 32. Namiotka accused her former pairs skating partner John Coughlin of sexual abuse after he took his own life in 2019. Coughlin died after he was suspended by the U.S. Center for SafeSport. Namiotka said in a Facebook post that Coughlin had abused her for two years. They skated together from 2004 to 2007, beginning when she was 14 and he was four years older. Namiotka’s parents told the newspaper the their daughter died on July 25 and had addiction issues due to the “trauma of sexual abuse.”
England women conquered Europe 10 weeks ago and proclaimed themselves ready for even more after beating the world champion United States 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley Stadium. Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway scored to help England beat the U.S. for the first time since 2017 and less than 10 months before the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Stanway’s penalty in the 33rd minute put the hosts in front for good before nearly 77,000 fans. Victory extended England's unbeaten run to 23 games under coach Sarina Wiegman. Sophia Smith scored for the Americans.

U.S. researchers say the number of gray whales off western North America has continued to fall over the last two years, a decline that resembles previous population swings over the past several decades. According to an assessment by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries released Friday, the most recent count put the population at 16,650 whales, which is down 38% from its peak in 2015-16. The whales also produced the fewest calves since scientists began counting the births in 1994. Scientists say that although the current population swing so far fits within historical patterns, it’s nevertheless concerning and warrants close monitoring.
The Cleveland Browns expect Deshaun Watson to return to their facility on Monday as the polarizing quarterback continues serving his 11-game NFL suspension for alleged sexual misconduct. Watson has been away from the Browns since Aug. 30, undergoing counseling and treatment in accordance with a settlement he made with the league. The 26-year-old QB was accused of being sexually inappropriate with women during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Texans. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski says he is eager to reunite with Watson, who won’t be eligible to practice until next month.
Justin Kluivert has scored his first goal for Valencia to help Gennaro Gattuso’s side win 2-1 at nine-man Osasuna in the Spanish league. Kluivert was making his first start since joining Valencia from Roma on loan. He scored in the 28th minute from a pass by Edinson Cavani. Kluivert is the son of former Valencia and Netherlands striker Patrick Kluivert. Both Cavani and Osasuna forward Chimy Ávila missed penalties and three players were sent off in the testy contest. Osasuna lost Unai García and Ruben Peña to direct red cards. Mouctar Diakhaby scored Valencia's second goal and saw a second yellow card apparently for inappropriate language after being substituted.

Nino Niederreiter scored his debut goal for the Nashville Predators, who beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1 in Prague in the NHL regular-season opener. The teams will play again on Saturday at Prague’s O2 Arena as part of the league’s return to Europe for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kiefer Sherwood put Nashville on top 1:01 into the game. Eeli Tolvanen also scored and Matt Duchene finished it off with an empty-netter. Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose in the first period, delighting the roaring crowd of 16,648 in his hometown. Tolvanen’s goal at 1:24 of the second put the Predators ahead to stay.
