If you ever wanted to get more mileage out of your Tesla Model S, Warped Perception may have found the answer

We can probably all agree that the electric car revolution is coming. That there is no question of. We are probably all seeing more and more electric vehicles on the road now, with Teslas being some of the most numerous out there. Elon Musk has managed to create a fleet of cars that appeal to the masses, in terms of their functionality, charging network and the overall performance. Of course, there is always room for improvement, and one thing people want out of a Tesla is more range.

Warped Perception on YouTube is one of those people. So he has come up with something very interesting indeed. He’s taken a Tesla Model S and modified it to become the first ever Cordless Tesla. And what is more remarkable, is that he has managed to get it to do a 1,600 mile + road trip without needing charging, one of the most impressive feats we have seen so far with any Tesla of any model. Gasoline is then used to charge the car and not a plug-in charger, and the results are incredibly interesting.

How one of these works is interesting in itself. The Cordless Tesla features a power plant generator inside it, and that is gasoline powered. The car then charges itself while it is sitting, but also on the move as well, to really extend the range of the Tesla. Now that sort of defeats the point of the Tesla being eco-friendly, but we digress. The video by Warped Perception features some of the build of the car, with the biggest feature being a single cylinder 400 cc overhead valve gasoline engine that makes around 10,000 wats or roughly 13.4 hp.

The build shows Warped Perception fitting that into the Tesla, and firing it up for the first time and running it in for 30 minutes to make sure it is functioning as intended. It was apparently a lot of work to fit the engine to the Tesla, and with no time to test it Warped Perception just headed out to see if it would work. On the road it looked like it was working, but then there was an issue when he realized that the gasoline was being sprayed out of the rear of the car.

After hitting Jurassic Gardens, the Tesla arrived at its next destination which was friend Nick’s place, to see his jet pontoon. The engine was leaking fuel for some 100 miles so it, but it did arrive. The biggest issue with that powerplant at the back of the Tesla though is the noise. It is incredibly loud which again, defeats the point of actually owning an electric vehicle as they are of course meant to be somewhat quieter than a gasoline powered car.

After hitting the road again, Warped Perception gets pulled over on the road. This was because he had to go at around 45 mph to keep enough energy in the car, so it will charge while driving, and so it will reach its next destination. The policeman and Warped Perception agree to him driving at 55 mph till it gets lower on power, and then he will stop for 15 minutes to charge the car and then get going again. It was then time to get some supplies, fill up the tank for the engine and let the car charge overnight. Yes really, he left it making a racket overnight.

The Tesla was at around 95% battery capacity when Warped Perception set off, and he was then scheduled to arrive with around 28% battery remaining on the battery. Things don’t go quite as well when the Tesla arrives at Lake Michigan, with the neighbors calling the Police on Warped Perception because of the noise. No surprise really. The trip isn’t going as fast as Warped Perception would want, just because of the energy that the generator is able to make, it's not quite the capacity that is actually needed.

Some of the sights that Warped Perception was able to take in on the road trip, including Bier Distillery before the Tesla makes its way to Kohler, Wisconisn, and the final leg of the journey. In total, the journey was some 1,842 miles, with the generator in the back of the Tesla effectively running for some 7 days straight. It wasn’t the ideal road trip as the generator wasn’t quite able to keep up with what the car needed, so Warped Perception is going to head right back to the drawing board to see what else can needs doing to make the build even more capable.
