Porsche unveils the new GT3 RS version of its 911 Type 992, a more powerful version and also much more expensive than the « normal » GT3.

Thing promised, thing due: Porsche lifted the veil this Wednesday, August 17, 2022 on the most typical track version of its 992 generation 911. And as the spy photos could suggest, this all-new 911 GT3 RS does not give in lace. It has also never been so far from the GT3. And never been so close to the 911 GT3 R.

Before looking at its aesthetics and the technical aspects that have been modified, let’s zoom in on its engine: and as we expected, this new 911 GT3 RS increases the power of its 4.0-litre boxer six-cylinder to 525 horsepower. This is indeed the number that was written on the license plate of the test cars spotted by our spy photographers. We were right to see it as a clue!

525 horsepower is 15 horsepower more than the 510 hp of the 911 GT3, a power obtained in particular thanks to new camshafts, the single butterfly admission system and the rigid valve control being them from sport automobile.

On the gearbox side, the seven-speed PDK has shorter ratios than the 911 GT3. What announce a 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds (3.4 seconds for the GT3), and a top speed of 296 km / h.

To curb such a cavalry, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS can count on monobloc front brakes with fixed caliper in aluminum with six pistons at the front (408 mm discs), and rear with four pistons of 380 mm. Compared to the GT3, the GT3 RS increases the pistons from 30 to 32 mm, and the thickness of the discs from 34 to 36 mm.

PCCB ceramic brakes (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) are optional: 410 mm at the front, 390 mm at the rear.

And since we are in the wheels, the forged light alloy rims with central locking are shod with road-approved sports tires of 275/35 R 20 at the front and 335/30 R 21 at the rear.

Obviously all these improvements are nothing without drastic weight measures. And thanks to the massive use of CFRP (front fenders, roof, bonnet, bucket seats, etc.), the 911 GT3 RS weighs 1,450 kilos empty (DIN) on the scale.

As you can see, the new 911 GT3 RS does not give in to discretion. Which is notably due to this disproportionate rear wing whose upper part is higher than the roof!

At the front there is a splitter to divide the air passing below, side fins direct the air outwards, slatted openings on the front fenders ventilate the wheel arches, air intakes behind the front wheels reduce the aero pressure in these…

The secret of the performance of this new 911 GT3 RS also lies in the fact that instead of the three radiators of the previous version, it has only one central radiator, as on the 911 RSR which won at Le Mans, or the 911 GT3 R. Inclined and positioned in the nose of the sports car, instead of the luggage space of the 911, it frees up space on the sides to improve active aerodynamics.

Thus the adjustable wings at the front and on the rear wing in two parts make it possible to gain a total downforce of 409 kilos at 200 km/h. That’s twice as much as the 991.2 generation GT3 RS, and three times as much as the current 911 GT3!

Downforce even increases to 860 kg at 285 km/h.

And as if that weren’t enough, this new Porsche is equipped with DRS as standard. At the push of a button, it is possible to reduce drag and thus increase speed in a straight line, like on F1!

Emergency braking benefits from the « airbrake » function which allows the car to be aerodynamically braked thanks to the active fins.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS, available in Clubsport and Weissach pack, is priced at €229,517 in Germany.
